Anti-sweating injections, or botulinum toxin injections that inhibit excessive sweating

It is estimated that up to 3% of the population suffers from a severe form of excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis. According to some studies, around 25% of people think that they “ sweat profusely” at least in some situations. The problem usually starts in childhood or adolescence.

Most common areas of excessive sweating:

  • Armpits
  • Palms of hands
  • Soles of feet

Diffuse sweating, or sweating all over the body, is characterized by a later onset and a specific cause (secondary hyperhidrosis), in which case botulinum toxin does not help and the actual cause (tumor, hormones) of excessive sweating  should be treated instead.

Botulinum toxin blocks the nerve transmission to the sweat glands, as a result of which sweating stops for an average of 4 to 12 months.

What is the procedure with anti-hyperhidrosis injections with botulinum toxin (Botox)?

A small amount of botulinum toxin is injected with a very fine needle under the skin in the problem area (armpits, palms of hands, soles of feet, face) with the spacing of 1 to 2 cm. Botulinum toxin blocks the nerve transmission to the sweat glands, as a result of which sweating stops for an average of 4 to 12 months.

The effect is longest in the armpits, shorter in the palms of hands and soles of feet. When the anti-sweating effect of the procedure disappears, the botulinum treatment can be repeated.

If necessary, the skin is numbed with special creams before the procedure.
